An IRS collection notice should not be ignored. The exact notice matters because different letters can involve different rights, deadlines and stages of the collection process.

1. Identify the Notice and Deadline

Read the notice number, tax periods, balance and response date. Do not assume every IRS letter means a levy has already occurred.

2. Confirm Filing Compliance

Missing required returns can complicate collection resolution. Determine whether the IRS expects additional filings and whether any Substitute for Return issues exist.

3. Review the Balance and Financial Situation

Confirm the periods involved and gather income, expense, asset and liability information. These facts can affect which collection alternatives may be available.

4. Evaluate Appropriate Options

Depending on the circumstances, taxpayers may consider payment, an installment agreement, hardship-based collection treatment, an Offer in Compromise or other procedures. Rights and deadlines can vary by notice and case.
